This is the first time I’ve ventured into the world of blogging. Though I’ve thought about it for years I have never settled on what exactly I want to write about. I have a lot of interests, a lot of opinions, and not a whole lot of time. But what is a truth for me at this point in my life is that I grew up in Ohio and I never, ever saw myself coming back as an adult, but here I am. My big plan was to wander the world, leaving a wake of good deeds behind me. It turns out that when you’re a single mom wandering the globe is not that easy. So without getting into the hairy details; I find myself living just outside of Cleveland with my boyfriend (who moved here from Chicago for me :)) and my 12 year old daughter. That’s us getting the keys to our brand new house (my daughter is not gonna be happy that I posted that picture (bwahaha))! So we’re not going anywhere anytime soon but that doesn’t mean that the urge for new experiences and places has seeped out of my veins. What to do, what to do.
Here’s what I think I’ll do: write about where I am. Cleveland has it’s issues – lots of them. Dwindling population, troubled economy, violence, etc. but there are also some cool things happening. I don’t know about most of them but I intend to find out. The idea here is that if I focus on a region rather than on a topic, I’ll be able to write about all of the things that I’m interested in: social justice, education, the environment, community service, food politics, local economy, nature, people, urban revitalization… you get the point. There’s enough news out there about all the terrible things that are happening so for the most part I’d like to focus on what people are doing to make their communities better places.
About the name: Sedentary most commonly means to sit around but it also means to stay in one place. I sit while I’m at work but for the most part sitting isn’t my thing so I’m using it here in the staying in one place sense of the wordl So I’m a wanderer by nature who is sedentary by circumstance. Get it?
